Descendants of Christian Singrey

Ancestral Line of Hoy Leland Singrey

Generation No. 1

1. CHRISTIAN (1)1 SINGREY was born September 27, 1723 in near Lucerne, Switzerland, and died June 01, 1817 in Baltimore Cty, MD. He married ELIZABETH INGOLD Abt. 1750. She was born Abt. 1737 in Switzerland, and died July 17, 1813 in Baltimore Cty, MD.

Notes for CHRISTIAN (1) SINGREY:
"The first Singrey of which we have an authentic account came to America in the year of 1746 from Switzerland where he was born near Luzerne, one of the capital cities of the land of William Tell - a land noted for the grandeur and sublimity of it's scenery, and the sturdy, impartial and uncompromising democracy of it's people. "This boy was named Christian, and his eyes first saw the light in his parents' alpine home on September 27, 1723. He received a liberal education and fitted himself for the practice of medicine and surgery, and is known to have been prominently gifted in the surgical branch of the profession.

"He landed at Philadelphia and located in the colony of Pennsylvania, took out naturalization papers Sept. 27, 1753. These papers bear the great seal of the crown of Great Britain (copy enclosed), on whose dominion it is said 'the sun never sets'. "He practiced his profession and returned to Switzerland in a few years ('a passion for a little lady whom he had known and loved in his native land became his master and he returned to claim her') and married Elizabeth Ingold, whom it is said was but thirteen years of age ('but their love laughed at obstacles') when this interesting and important event occured; after which they returned to the colonies and finally located in Baltimore Cty , MD.

"He served as a surgeon in Gen. Washington's Army during the revolutionary war and was stationed in the city of Baltimore until the war ended.

"He loaned (nearly half a bushel) of gold and silver money to the Colonial Gov't. (The Continental Congress), receiving in return scrip which proved to be worthless, thereby causing him considerable loss pecuniary. However, being full of the love of liberty and the pure patriotism of this immortal epoch in the world's history, he counted but as dross this filthy lucre.

"The 'lust of lucre and the dread of death' had no abiding influence with him; therefore, after the war ended he went resolutely to work and soon was the owner of a large tract of land, a comfortable home, and was considered at that time to be wealthy. Being a man of intellience, he governed well his family. Thus they lived and prospered both in 'basket and in store'; and with the blessing of children made life to them a joy and a satisfaction."

All of the above info excerpted from notes of J. L. Van Buskirk's Chronological History of The Singrey Family which he wrote in 1890. (J. L. Van Buskirk was --------?)

"A rather singular incident is related concerning her - the mother dreamed
her little daughter would be drowned, and sure enough the dream was verified.
She was left in care of a servant girl who rocked her to sleep and left her.
She awoke, wandered to a spring of water near and was drowned as foretold in
                     her mother's dream."

taken suddenly ill and died on Dec 11, 1817. No data in regard to their family.
An interesting story is related of Aunt Mary as she was called. She wanted to kill
a hawk that was depredating her flock of chickens, but as she did not understand the
use of fire arms, or rather the handling of a rifle, she held it upside down shooting at
random, but killed the hawk without injuring any other living thing about the
                    premises."

He married (1) JANE CHARITY LEMMON October 30, 1808 in Baltimore Cty, MD, daughter of ALEXIS LEMMON and RACHAEL STANSBURY. She was born March 23, 1784 in Baltimore Cty, MD, and died May 09, 1831 in Perry Township, Lake Cty, OH. He married (2) RACHAEL LEMMON April 12, 1832, daughter of ALEXIS LEMMON and RACHAEL STANSBURY. She was born February 12, 1783, and died July 05, 1850.

Notes for JEHU (1) SINGREY:
Jehu was the "eighth child of Christian & Elizabeth". After marrying Jennie Lemmon, they " lived in Baltimore Cty, MD until the autumn of 1815 when they moved to Morrow Cty, OH. *They were 22 days on the journey and domiciled in a cabin belonging to his brother-in-law, John Shauck, about one-half mile east of where the town of Johnsville stands and near the Shauck's mills on the Clearfork of the Mohican Creek. Here they lived until the spring of 1816, during the winter of which he erected a log house on his 160 acre tract that he had entered in the meantime and situated in the Lost Run Valley. Here they moved and began the serious work of clearing from the ground the heavy timber. This was an arduous task and with the methods at hand in those days made the process exceedingly slow and tedious. During the first two years he purchased their breadstuff at Mt. Vernon and Newark from 16 to 40 miles away. He was a miller and millwright and aided to build some of the first mills erected in the country. When they moved into this unbroken wilderness they found wild game and wild men in abundance. The Wyandott Indians camped for some years on his premises, but at this time being shorn of their war-like propensities, peaceful relations were maintained. Their chief 'Tom Lion' however, was full of treachery and vindictiveness. He was killed by a man named Russel, who buried his body in a swamp. Like all pioneers, Jehu was an expert with the rifle and as hunting was more of a necessity than a pastime, venison was a common occupant of the larder and with 'hog and hominy', wild turkey and 'Johnny cake' made a feast a king might envy. His family grew amid happy peace and plenty. He owned 320 acres in Perry and Congress townships. Was elected (the first) Justice of the Peace in 1817. Was a Democrat and cast his first vote for Thomas Jefferson, the Father of Democracy.

"Himself and wife were members of the old school Baptist Church at Salem, OH and were baptized by Elder Benjamin Green, and were among its first members. He removed to the town of Bellville, Richland Cty, in the spring of 1836 and lived there three years and moved back to the farm. Before this time, or May 9, 1831, his wife (Jennie) died."
(from J.L. Van Buskirk's History of The Singrey Family)

* This move and subsequent experience is described elsewhere (but probably also by J. L. VanBuskirk) as follows: "After seven years of wedded life had passed over their heads, they were fired with a desire to see the new Eldorado just carved out of the great Northwest Territory; accordingly they journeyed across the mountains and reached (John Shauck's cabin)....Jehu, James McClure and Peter Wirick cut the road from Lexington through Kelley's Corners in the winter of 1816. On the morning of his first visit to this place, he set out with gun in hand, and just as he reached the hill on which the house stands at present, he was confronted by three Indians, one of which gave a low whistle and waved him back with his hand, and looking down in the hollow, he saw three deer feeding and bringing his gun to his shoulder, sent a ball with unerring aim through the heart of one of them. He soon removed the hide and gave the Indians half, and ever after that they called him the 'White Chief'. They were his nearest neighbors, there being a wigwam of over 150 Wyandotte Indians camped in sight of his father's house for seven consecutive years. The best of feeling ever existed between this family and these dusky children of the forest, and no instance of treachery or depredation occured during their stay. Mr. Singrey associated with them until he could talk their language. The wife often baked for them and exchanged bread for fresh meat. The wolves made sad havoc of his sheep during the first five years; hogs were killed by the bears. Jehu was a fine marksman; he killed wild cats, bears, and wolves; he killed 23 deer from Sept. to Christmas. The fifth season after his arrival, more wheat was raised than could be consumed in the family and he took a load to Mt. Vernon where he was offered 12 1/2 cts/bushel for hog food; he drove on to Zanesville where he received 15 cts/bushel in sugar, rice, salt and leather. On the organization of the Harmony Regular Baptist Church, the Singreys became its first members."

One source says Jehu & Jane had seven children but I found reference to only six. Another source (History of Morrow Cty, OH - 1890) says there were "six living children and two dead" (apparently in infancy).

Jehu's later marriage to Rachael Lemmon, after Jane's death, produced no children.

Notes for DR. DAVID MARKEY LEMMON SINGREY:
"...was born on his present farm; he went to school near where his brother Joshua lives, in the first school house built in Perry Township, taught by Lawrence VanBuskirk, who boarded at his father's, and often carried (David) to school on his back. As he grew up, he toiled in the clearing and in the field from early morn till the day's close, until he was 18 years old, when his father moved to Bellville, OH. He attended schools in that place until he reached his majority, reading medicine with Dr. Jacob Singrey (his uncle) during vacations. He then entered the office of Dr. James C. Lee (his bro-in-law) of Belleville where he reviewed the whole course of study which he completed in two and a half years. A series of popular lectures on medical subjects were given at Belleville during the winter of 1846. The doctor removed to the old homestead, where he began the practice of medicine in Oct. 1847, and has continued ever since, except one year and four months spent at Albion, Noble Cty, IN. He has a good practice in Morrow, Knox and Richland counties. The doctor is a fine type of that class of men whom our country delights to honor as "self-made" and self-educated; he has been a member of rhe Richland Cty Medical Ass'n; he has been a constant reader of the best books of which he has a fine collection; he is a consistent member of the Harmony Regular Baptist Church, having united with that body in Sept. 1865, in which he is now Trustee; he cast his first vote of James K. Polk in 1844 and stands with that time-honored party today." (from a three page bio which was apparently copied verbatim from "The History of Morrow County, Ohio" which Joyce has)

Grew up in Morrow Cty, OH
Moved to Whitley Cty, IN in 1883, then to Marshall Cty in 1892.
Was early in career (?) a "peace officer" in Delaware, OH.
Was at some point a resident of Belleville, OH and telegraph operator on the B&O RR.
Became station agent for Nickel Plate RR in Argos, IN until elected county auditor in 1904.
He served on the Argos, IN school board for six years.
Worked as an auditor in Marshall Cty.
Was instrumental in organization of Marshall Cty Trust & Savings (the third bank in Plymouth, formed in 1907 and capitalized with $25,000). He was its first secretary and was cashier from 1909-1914.
As health was failing though, in April 1914 he sold his home and his 30 shares of Marshall T & S to a Mr. F. E. Gamble and, in Sept of that year, moved the family to CA for its warmer climate. (They were in CA from '14 -'18 but must obviously have been in Saco, MT for a short time as that's where Dad & Mom met in about 1917 -- or did Mom go there alone?)
Hoy moved back to Stevens Point, WI in 1918 ( why?) where he died in 1920. The family moved back to California in about 1922?
The Saco "Independent" newspaper ran the following obit: "Hoy had a very kind disposition and was very well-liked by all who knew him; well read and well educated. He was the first president of The Indiana Checkers Ass'n. and a professional(!) checkers player, defeating some of the best players in the land". He also apparently wrote some books and was a frequent contributor to columns in newspapers and magazines on how to play checkers.
There is (still?) a small, vertical, triangular headstone marking his grave in the Plymouth, IN cemetary.
